Complex Contagions and the Weakness of Long Ties

چکیده

The strength of weak ties is that they tend to be long – they connect socially distant locations. Recent research on “small worlds” shows that remarkably few long ties are needed to give large and highly clustered populations the “degrees of separation” of a random network, in which information can rapidly diffuse. We test whether this “strength of weak ties” generalizes from simple to complex contagions – those in which the credibility of information or the willingness to adopt an innovation requires independent confirmation or reinforcement from multiple sources. Using Watts and Strogatz’s original small world model, we demonstrate that as thresholds increase, more random ties are needed to speed up complex contagions and fewer random ties are needed to preclude diffusion entirely. Results show that contagions requiring strong social reinforcement – such as the spread of collective action, social movements, and risky innovations – depend primarily on the width of bridges between otherwise distant locations, not just their length. Wide bridges are a characteristic feature of many spatial networks, which may account in part for the widely observed tendency for social movements to diffuse spatially.

Complex Contagions: A Decade in Review

Since the publication of “Complex Contagions and the Weakness of Long Ties” in 2007, complex contagions have been studied across an enormous variety of social domains. In reviewing this decade of research, we discuss recent advancements in applied studies of complex contagions, particularly in the domains of health, innovation diffusion, social media, and politics. We also discuss how these emp...

Failure in Complex Social Networks

A class of inhomogenously wired networks called ‘‘scale-free’’ networks have been shown to be more robust against failure than more homogenously connected exponential networks. The robustness of scale-free networks consists in their ability to remain connected even when failure occurs. The diffusion of information and disease across a network only requires a single contact between nodes, making...

Complex Contagions Models in Opportunistic Mobile Social Networks

Information contagions is one of the key applications in opportunistic mobile social networks (OMSNs). Most of the recent work only considers the simple contagions, in which the “infected” node will infect each of its opinion-free neighbors through simple contact. However, when the behaviors, beliefs, or preferences spread through the social contact, the willingness to participate may require i...

Blocking Complex Contagions Using Community Structure

Blocking the propagation of contagions in populations has many applications, such as stopping the dissemination of leaked information and impeding the spread of an ideology or opinion. Several methods exist for blocking contagions by removing key or critical nodes from a network representation of a population. Some methods, based on network topology alone, run very fast, but their performance c...
